On Wednesday, the EPA designated the Dolet Hills power plant out of compliance. This was the only Louisiana power plant to get that designation. Sulfur dioxide emissions have been linked respiratory problems.
The Sierra Club called on Cleco to clean up its plant. Woody Martin, chair of the group's Delta Chapter, called the plant "dirty" and "outdated." He also charged that Cleco had ignored warnings for years about the high levels of sulfur dioxide emitted at the plant.
The plant faces upgrading its facility to come into compliance with the EPA's standards.
State environmental officials disagree with the EPA's ruling, saying the emissions data is still incomplete.
