The latest reactor status data from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission suggests that two nuclear units – one in the Southwest and the other in the East – are returning to service after outages.

It appears that the South Texas Project 1 has exited its refueling and maintenance outage. The unit was listed at 29 percent generation in NRC data on Monday Dec. 21 after being listed at zero power on Dec. 18.

South Texas Project is a dual-unit pressurized water reactor (PWR) station located in Matagorda County, Texas. Each unit has a generating capacity of roughly 1,200 MW.

The South Texas Project is jointly owned by NRG Energy; CPS Energy and Austin Energy. Together, the three generators own South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Co.

Likewise, the Limerick 2 station was listed at 21 percent on Dec. 21 after being listed at zero power on Dec. 18.

An Exelon facility, Limerick 2 is a roughly 1,100 MW boiling water reactor located in Montgomery County, Pa.

An Exelon spokesperson said Limerick Unit 2 returned to service over the weekend after successfully completing a planned maintenance outage that began Dec. 13. During the outage, technicians performed maintenance on the turbine and replaced electrical connections on the main generator.
