Power restoration continues in Great Lakes area after severe storms

DETROIT (AP) — Crews continued restore power to thousands of homes and businesses in Michigan that lost electricity during severe storms before Christmas.

About 13,000 of more than 183,000 Consumers Energy customers remained without service Sunday, the utility said.

Thunderstorms followed by winds with gusts topping 60 mph toppled trees, utility poles and power lines across western and northern Michigan on Wednesday and Thursday.

"While we have restored more than 90 percent of the customers affected by this holiday storm, we will not rest until all the lights are back on," said Mary Palkovich, the utility's vice president of energy delivery. "We remain focused on completing the restoration safely and thank our customers for their patience and understanding, especially during the Christmas season."

Service was expected to be returned to most customers by Sunday night, though restoration would continue into Monday for portions of Alcona, Iosco, Gladwin, Ogema, Oscoda and Roscommon counties.

Consumers Energy crews were being assisted by utility workers from five other states.

High winds on Thursday also caused outages to more than 14,000 Cloverland Electric Cooperative members in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. About 1,400 still had no electricity on Sunday, The Mining Journal of Marquette reported.

The nonprofit, member-owned utility serves more than 42,000 homes and businesses in Chippewa, Delta, Mackinac, Luce and Schoolcraft counties.
