AEP Texas crews had continued making progress Monday evening in the restoration of power in west Texas. As of 5 a.m., crews have reduced the number of outages to about 1,500 in the Abilene District from Abilene north to Childress and Vernon.

Shown below is a breakdown of those outages as of 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning:

·      Abilene area – 3

·      Childress area – 140

·      Hamlin area – 60

·      Stamford area – 410

·      Vernon area – 890

AEP Texas continues to project restoration of service to 95 percent of the customers impacted by the winter storm in West Texas by Tuesday at 5 p.m., if not sooner for many. At the height of the storm, about 15,000 customers were left without power throughout the AEP Texas service territory, most in the rural areas of west Texas.

Muddy conditions, remaining snow drifts and icy roads continue to make access difficult to areas where repair work is needed. In some cases, heavy equipment will be needed to repair or replace utility poles and cross arms.

The number of estimated distribution poles needing repair or replacement has been increased to 90 along with the replacement of 275 cross arms. Also, the number of estimated transmission structures were damaged or knocked down as a result of the storm is now estimated to total 13 with 85 transmission cross arms in need of repair or replacement. Those numbers could increase as the damage assessment continues.

Ice accumulated on power lines is estimated at from one-half to three-quarters of an inch in many areas. High winds with gusts reaching 50 miles-per-hour have resulted in some power lines “galloping” before falling to the ground. Area residents are reminded to stay away from any downed power lines and to consider downed power lines to be energized.
