Burns & McDonnell is teaming with Skanska USA and Ecco III Enterprises Construction to design and construct a new 720 MW combined-cycle power plant in Wawayanda, New York, a community in the Lower Hudson River Valley located 65 miles northwest of New York City.

Engineering design of the natural gas-fired CPV Valley Energy Center is now underway and construction expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2015. The plant is expected to be in commercial operation by early 2018.

The power facility will be owned and operated by Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) and partner Diamond Generating. Burns & McDonnell will provide comprehensive engineering design for the duration of the project as well as equipment procurement and construction management services in collaboration with Skanska and Ecco.

The CPV Valley Energy Center will be powered by two SGT6-5000F gas turbines, one SST-5000 steam turbine and three SGen-1000A generators.

Combined cycle turbines are paired with steam turbines that use exhaust heat to generate additional power, thus boosting energy efficiency per Btus consumed. The technology greatly reduces the emissions footprint per unit of power produced while also reducing overall fuel costs.

The Siemens combined cycle units also will reduce water usage by about 85 percent, thanks to a plant design that incorporates advanced air cooling. Additionally, the plant will use treated and recycled water from a nearby wastewater treatment plant.

The CPV Valley Energy Center will interconnect with the New York Power Authority’s 345-kV Marcy South Transmission Line, creating additional grid stability within a broad region.
