Salt River Project customers set energy demand record

For the first time since 2014, Salt River Project delivered a record amount of electric power to its Phoenix-area retail customers.

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, SRP distributed an estimated retail peak demand of 6,806 MW. It also marked the first time a record for energy usage has been set on a weekend since 1972.

That peak topped the previous SRP demand record set on Friday, the day before with 6,781 MW.

Strong customer demand is the result of several factors, including a series of extreme daytime temperatures, higher overnight temperatures and relatively high humidity, as well as an increase in the number of SRP electric customers. The high temperature recorded in Phoenix on Saturday was 115 following a series of days that included extreme heat warnings.

SRP’s electrical grid was able to handle the record demand due in part to investments in new technology as well as a comprehensive maintenance plan to ensure optimal performance.

SRP is a community-based, not-for-profit public power utility and the largest provider of electricity in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, serving more than 1 million customers. SRP also is the metropolitan area’s largest supplier of water, delivering about 800,000 acre-feet annually to municipal, urban and agricultural water users.
