Saskatoon to roll out Elster AMI solution

The city of Saskatoon, Canada has selected Elster's EnergyAxis Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution to automate meter data collection.

"Concerns over smart meter safety have been in the forefront of our planning," said Kevin Hudson, metering & sustainable electricity manager for the city of Saskatoon. "Elster's excellent safety record and success in recent Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing help clear the way for the city council to issue unanimous approval to proceed with this project."

Between 2009 and 2015, the city deployed 30,000 digital smart meters from Elster for new and replacement installations, instead of older style "dumb" meters. Although it continued to read the digital meters manually, the approach enabled the city to systematically and cost-effectively build out a future AMI infrastructure.

Now that the city has selected Elster's EnergyAxis solution, the previously installed smart meters can simply be activated onto the network. Nearly 30,000 additional electricity meters and 70,000 water modules, plus software, and communications hardware will complete the project.

The new smart grid solution will replace city of Saskatoon's manual meter reading system with an advanced, multi-utility metering and communications infrastructure.

"With EnergyAxis, the city of Saskatoon can provide their citizens with the ability to track daily water and electricity usage and better manage their consumption and costs," said Jack Robertson, General Manager Elster Metering Canada. "The new system also enables the city to respond more quickly, increase customer engagement, restore service faster, increase operational efficiency, and provide real-time monitoring capability."

An initial deployment of the new project's infrastructure will begin this year, with city employees beginning to train for the new system in 2015. The full deployment of electricity meters is expected to last through 2017. Water communication modules will continue through 2020.

Saskatoon is the largest city in the province of Saskatchewan.
