China General Nuclear powered up unit No. 2 at Yangjiang nuclear power plant in the province of Guangdong, according to World Nuclear News.

The power company said the unit ran through 168 hours of demonstration by June 5, meeting the requirements to enter commercial operation.

Yangjiang No. 2 uses a CPR-1000 pressurized water reactor. CGN began building unit No. 1 December 2008 and No. 2 the year after. Unit No. 1 went into operation in March last year.

CGN is building two more units at Yangjiang, both using Advanced CPR-1000. Construction of these began in 2013, and all six units are slated for operation in 2019.

With this unit operating, CGN now has a dozen nuclear reactors generating, with a power generation capacity of 12.7 GW.
