Vianden Pumped Storage Plant

The amount of new electric generation capacity commissioned during March was a relatively modest 295 MW, according to a monthly infrastructure update from a branch of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

The March data from FERC’s Office of Energy Projects also notes that 21 MW of new hydroelectric pumped storage came online. The hydro expansion was in the form of an amended license for the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant Project No. 2680, located on Lake Michigan, in Mason County, Mich.

The Ludington project is jointly owned by CMS Energy utility Consumers Energy and DTE Energy utility Detroit Edison. The facility is operated by Consumers Energy.

Ludington has a total generation capacity in excess of 1,800 MW.

Meanwhile, FERC also reported that El Paso Electric’s 176-MW natural gas-fired Montana Power Station Phase 1 Project in El Paso County, Texas is online. Phase 1 consists of two 88-MW units, FERC reported.

In addition, Hoopeston Wind LLC’s 98 MW Hoopeston Wind Project in Vermilion County, Ill., is online

The Office of Energy Projects reported that 1,229 MW of generating capacity has been installed during the first three months of 2015 compared to 1,623 MW of new generation that was deployed during the first three months of 2014.
