Westinghouse, EDF sign nuclear fuel supply contract

Westinghouse Electric Co. announced that it has been awarded a long-term contract to provide several thousand tons of fuel to Electricité de France (EDF) for use in their nuclear reactors in France.

This contract will continue the current contract expiring at the end of 2014 and will give Westinghouse the opportunity to go on providing a  portion of EDF's total nuclear fuel requirements.

Under terms of the contract, Westinghouse will manufacture the fuel at its facilities in Västerås, Sweden; Springfields, U.K. and through the European Fuel Group at the Enusa plant in Juzbado, Spain.

The associated field and operation services will be offered via existing Westinghouse French infrastructures. Westinghouse has been an important supplier of fuel to the French nuclear fleet since 2003. Since then, Westinghouse has delivered about 6,000 fuel assemblies to the plants.

Westinghouse is a single-source global nuclear fuel provider for pressurized water reactors (PWRs), including Russian-designed VVER reactors, as well as boiling water reactors (BWRs) and advanced gas-cooled reactors (AGRs).

Westinghouse provides nuclear fuel to 145 plants globally, 65 of which are in Europe, and has 10 nuclear fuel manufacturing locations around the world, including two sites in Europe: Springfields Fuels Limited in Preston, Lancashire, U.K. and Westinghouse Electric Sweden in Västerås.

Westinghouse Electric Co., a group company of Toshiba Corp., is the world's pioneering nuclear energy company and is a leading supplier of nuclear plant products and technologies to utilities throughout the world. Westinghouse supplied the world's first pressurized water reactor in 1957 in Shippingport, Pa., U.S.
