EEI, IBEW honor lineworkers on National Lineman Appreciation Day

The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) celebrated National Lineman Appreciation Day and salute the men and women who risk their lives daily to keep electricity reliably flowing to our nation’s homes and businesses.

Lineworkers construct and maintain electric transmission and distribution facilities that deliver electricity to millions of homes, factories and commercial and retail businesses. Lineworkers are essential in the work to quickly and safely restore service following an outage, often in difficult conditions.

“Our nation’s lineworkers put themselves in harm’s way each and every day to ensure electricity is safely delivered to our homes and businesses,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “Following severe natural disasters these dedicated men and women work around the clock in dangerous conditions, often far from their families, to restore power. Today we honor and thank them for their dedication and service and recognize the critical role they play in keeping the lights on.”

“Hurricanes, ice storms, and other devastating natural disasters certainly put the spotlight on the nation’s power lineworkers,” said IBEW President Ed Hill. “We’re grateful to the courageous, hardworking men and women who work tirelessly to restore service following these difficult events, as well as their daily work to keep power flowing. IBEW is proud to recognize the dedication and commitment of our nation’s lineworkers.”

To honor the nation’s lineworkers, U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina introduced a resolution, H.Res.512, in support of designating March 31, 2014, as National Lineman Appreciation Day.
