Solar power jobs grew by 23,000 in 2013

The solar power industry created 23,682 new jobs in 2013, increasing the number of jobs in the industry to 142,698, according to The Solar Foundation’s fourth annual National Solar Jobs Census. The increase represents a 19.9 percent growth in employment since September 2012.

The Solar Foundation Director and President Andrea Luecke stated in a release that the solar power industry has added nearly 50,000 jobs and grown by 53 percent in the last four years. According to the foundation, solar employers are expecting to add another 22,000 over the coming year.

Ernest Moniz, secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), praised the latest numbers.

“This is an exciting time for the solar industry in the United States, made even more clear by the latest industry job figures," Moniz said in a statement. "According to the Solar Foundation, today there are more than 140,000 Americans employed up and down the U.S. solar supply chain and across every state. Since 2010, solar energy has created nearly 50,000 new American jobs and employment has grown nearly 20 percent in the last year alone.

The National Solar Jobs Census 2013 was conducted by The Solar Foundation and BW Research Partnership with support from The George Washington University Solar Institute. The report is derived from data collected from more than 2,081 solar firms and measured employment growth in the solar industry between September 2012 and November 2013.
