Five transmission projects switched on in October

Five Texas competitive renewable energy zone (CREZ) projects came online in October, involving nearly 400 miles of 345-kV transmission line with an estimated cost of $753.1 million.

The three longest were Electric Transmission Texas’ 90-mile Clear Crossing to Dermott, 89-mile Edith Clarke to Cottonwood segment and 84-mile Edith Clarke to Clear Crossing. The projects were estimated to cost $189.2 million, $175.4 million and $157.7 million, respectively, according to TransmissionHub.

In addition, Cross Texas Transmission’s Silverton to Tesla was completed in mid-October at an estimated cost of $134.4 million.

The only other large project completed was Wind Energy Transmission of Texas’ Scurry County South to Long Draw, with an estimated cost of $96.4 million.

Six new projects were announced last month as well. The New England Clean Power Link sponsored by Transmission Developers, Inc., marked the largest project as it is expected to run 150 miles from the U.S./Canada border to Ludlow, Vermont. The HVDC line would run underwater and underground. The estimated cost is $1.2 billion and the project is expected online in 2019.

The estimated $73.5 million Northeast Transmission System Improvement Project by Exelon's Baltimore Gas and Electric is a 28-mile, 230-kV project that is expected online by 2018.

A number of projects in Alberta sponsored by AltaLink were approved by the Alberta Utility Commission (AUC) last month. AltaLink reported that the 150-mile, 500-kV Western Alberta Transmission Line would cost more than originally thought — from $1.39 billion to $1.65 billion.

Additionally, FirstEnergy's Glenwillow to Bruce Mansfield Project has decreased the estimated cost from $184 million to $151 million. The project is a 345-kV, 110-mile circuit that is expected online in 2015.
