Alstom installs 6 MW wind turbine

Alstom completed the installation of its 6 MW Haliade 150, which the company said is the world’s largest offshore wind turbine installed in sea waters.

Alstom installed the wind turbine off Ostend harbor at the Belwind site in Belgium. The turbine has a 150-meter rotor with blades extending 73.5 meters.

The turbine uses direct drive instead of a gearbox and has a permanent magnet generator to reduce the mechanical parts inside the device.

The U.S. has recently started moving toward building larger offshore wind power projects, and the U.S. Interior Department has recently held two auctions for offshore wind power project sites.
