Nuclear Regulatory Commission may scale down its operations due to shutdown

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said its funds are expected run out by the middle of this week due to the lack of congressional approval for additional funds.

In the absence of action by Congress, NRC will begin notifying employees whether they are furloughed. It is illegal for employees on furloughed to perform agency work.

NRC has canceled public meetings scheduled at the NRC headquarters in Washington, D.C. and around the country, including two public meetings in California on nuclear waste.

If there is no end to the government shutdown, the NRC will begin scaled-down operations focusing on immediate public safety and security issues, according to statements released by the commission.

"Additional meetings scheduled throughout October and early November may also be affected if the current federal government shutdown continues," NRC said in a statement.

The NRC had been operating largely normally for the first week of October, using unexpended funds from previous appropriations, according to the commission. It held two public meetings on nuclear waste management at agency headquarters (October 1), and in Denver, Colorado (October 3).
