Lockheed Martin to design marine thermal power plant

Lockheed Martin contracted to design a thermal marine power generator that the defense contractor said would have a renewable power generation capacity of 10 MW. Financial details on the contract have not been made public.

Lockheed Martin will pair with China-based Reignwood Group in a 3.5-year project to build the marine power device, which will use a technology called ocean thermal energy conversion.

The technology has been tested in smaller applications, according to Lockheed Martin, but not on a commercial scale. The technology can use a fluid medium to harness the temperature differentials between warm and cold ocean waters to power a steam turbine and generate power.
