Gamesa to equip 6 MW for Alberta wind farm

Global wind energy manufacturer Gamesa Technology Corp., secured a deal to supply three wind turbines for a 6 MW wind farm in western Canada, with a five-year operation and maintenance services agreement.

Under the deal, the Box Springs Wind Project will be erected on land owned by the city of Medicine Hat, located about 180 miles from Calgary in the southeastern corner of the province of Alberta, and will feature three Gamesa G90-2.0 MW wind turbines on 78-meter towers.

The project is underpinned by a long-term power purchase agreement between Medicine Hat and the project’s developer, Box Springs Wind Corp., a unit of WindRiver Power Corp.

Under the power purchase agreement, Medicine Hat, which played a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for this innovative clean energy initiative, will receive all electricity generated by the project together with all carbon credits attributable to the project.

The Box Springs Wind Project will produce enough renewable energy to power about 1,800 homes a year. It will provide about 3 percent of Medicine Hat’s electricity needs.

Completion of the Box Springs Wind Project is targeted for mid-2014.
