Westar wants 80 MW of renewable energy

Westar Energy is requesting proposals for the addition of at least 80 MW of renewable energy potential to its electric power generation portfolio.

The Topeka, Kansas-based electric utility is looking to partner with a developer to build and operate a renewable power project, with the goal of commercial operation by 2016.

All forms of renewable energy, including solar energy, wind power and landfill gas-to-energy will be considered, according to Westar Energy.

The extra capacity will not be enough to replace any traditional power plants, according to the utility.
