Florida biomass energy facility nears commercial operation

The 100 MW biomass-fired Gainesville Renewable Energy Center started generating electric power and is expected to be fully operational in mid-November, according to reports.

The power plant began operating around the middle of August and produced about 15 MW on its first day, although the output has varied since and has reached its full 100 MW capacity at times, according to the report. The plant still must perform a series of performance tests and air emissions tests.

Gainesville Renewable Energy Center CFO Al Morales said the company did not consider the startup a huge milestone, but just “one more step” in the facility’s path to full commercial operation, according to Power Engineering.
