19 employers join DOE workplace electric vehicle charging initiative

The market for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is expanding, according to the Department of Energy. Electric vehicle sales in the U.S. have tripled as Americans purchased more than 50,000 PEVs in 2012 alone.

To accommodate this surge in electric vehicle ownership, U.S. employers are joining the DOE's Workplace Charging Challenge — an initiative to increase the number of U.S. employers offering workplace charging by tenfold in the next five years.

Since the DOE launched the Workplace Charging Challenge in January as part of the DOE's EV Everywhere Grand Challenge, 48 employers have committed to providing electric vehicle charging access to at least one of their worksites — increasing the convenience of owning a PEV and providing employees with more options for charging their vehicles.

The DOE announced June 12 that 19 new partners committed to the challenge, including: ABB Inc., BookFactory, CFV Solar Test Laboratory, Cisco Systems, the city of Auburn Hills, Dominion Resources Inc., DTE Energy, Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems, JLA Public Involvement, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, lynda.com, MetLife, NetApp, Pepco Holdings Inc., Samsung Electronics, Schneider Electric, The Venetian and The Palazzo, WESCO and Zappos.

These new partners join a group of U.S. employers who are implementing and expanding their workplace charging programs.
