Invenergy buys GE wind turbine with battery energy storage

Invenergy bought three General Electric (NYSE: GE) 2.5-120 wind turbines as part of an 86-turbine deal with GE for a wind farm in Mills County, Texas. The 2.5-120 uses the power of the industrial internet to analyze data points, which will help manage wind variability while communicating with nearby turbines.

The wind turbine also incorporates short-term battery energy storage using the Durathon Battery technology with three software applications that have ramp control, predictable power and regulates frequency.

The 2.5-120 turbines are scheduled to be installed this year at the Goldthwaite Wind Energy facility, currently under construction in central Texas. The project is expected to commence full commercial operation by the end of 2013. Subsequently, Invenergy will be among the first power producers to test the benefits of data-driven, turbine-to-battery communication in predicting wind power production in 15-60-minute increments.

Invenergy has developed more than 7,100 MW of clean energy projects that are in operation, in construction, or under contract, including 49 wind, three solar and six natural gas power facilities.
