Silver Spring Networks selected by Unison for New Zealand smart grid

Hastings, New Zealand, August 27, 2012 — Silver Spring Networks, a leading networking platform and solutions provider for smart energy networks, today announced that it has been selected by Unison for a smart grid project in New Zealand.

Silver Spring's standards-based IPv6 networking solution will be deployed across the entirety of Unison's service territory (in Hawke's Bay, Rotorua and Taupo). Unison's smart grid roll out is expected to deliver improved reliability and service for consumers, provide enhanced management of power grid assets, and enable greater overall energy efficiency.

The deployment leverages Silver Spring's Gen4 networking technology, providing increased performance, reliability, and security. Silver Spring's standards-based IPv6 networking platform supports a range of solutions and applications focused on increasing power grid performance and improving energy efficiency.

Silver Spring's technologies, growing partner ecosystem, and broad customer adoption have led to more than 12 million homes and businesses networked on its Smart Energy Platform worldwide.

Unison Networks Limited owns, designs, manages and operates the electricity network that serves the Hawke's Bay, Taupo and Rotorua regions of New Zealand. The network spans over 9,000km and supplies over 108,000 connected customers with about 1,678 GWh of electricity per annum, making Unison one of the larger electricity distribution businesses in New Zealand.
