India sanctions smart grid project

Thiruvananthapuram, India, August 13, 2012 — India's Union Power Ministry sanctioned $6.3 million to pilot the smart grid project to make power distribution efficient and reliable in the state.

In phase I, the smart grid project will be made applicable for 25,000 LT consumers in the state. A smart grid is a grid that incorporates information and communication technology to enhance the reliability and sustainability of an electrical grid and the financial aspects of maintaining it.

Power ministry sources said that a full-fledged smart grid will take time to develop in Kerala, as it involves all aspects related to distribution and large-scale integration with the ICT.

In phase I of the project, as it is conceived now, the ministry plans to introduce smart metering.

The project is to be implemented as part of the three-part Restructured-Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Program (R-APDRP), which is being implemented in 43 towns in the state.

Better billing, automatic fault finding and rectification system which enables faster repair of damages in the system are some of the benefits of a smart grid.
