MISO sets new record for peak demand

Carmel, Ind., July 25, 2012 — As soaring temperatures continue across the U.S., MISO successfully managed the demand for electricity in its footprint July 23, while setting a new all-time record for energy use in the region.

The regional transmission system operator, which manages the flow of energy across high voltage lines in 11 states, saw the demand for energy use reach 98,576 MW. The peak was recorded at 3:54 p.m. (EST).

Today's demand is expected to be about 93,000 MWs, but conservative operations have been declared for the region because of continuing high temperatures.

MISO issued conservative operations and hot weather alerts July 23 around noon suspending transmission maintenance and conducting a review of outage plans for deferral and cancelation.

A new peak load was also set July 23 for the MISO reliability coordination area. The peak was 104,669 MWs also recorded at 3:54 p.m. (EST)

MISO ensures reliable operation of, and equal access to high-voltage power lines in 11 U.S. states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. MISO manages one of the world's largest energy markets, with more than $23.6 billion in gross market energy transactions annually.
