Turkmenistan modernizes electric grid

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, June 22, 2012 — The implementation of a large-scale program to modernize power grids in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan, is progressing, according to reports.

Since the beginning of the year, the additional equipment capacity of 12 municipal power transformer substations was increased and the mounting of separate transformer substations 10/0, 4kV was made.

The specialists of the Ashgabatenergy production association and the Sutun specialised department of Turkmenenergogurlushyk are carrying out modernization of power grids in the capital's residential areas.

To improve the power supply for residents of Parakhat, additional cables have been laid. Power supply in the settlements in north of the capital, namely Shor and Garadamak was improved, where the power transmission network of voltage of 6-10kV is fully upgraded and an electrical substation with a capacity of 110 kV is rebuilt.

The main base of the substations works on modern equipment produced by the French company Schneider Electric. Schneider Electric signed an agreement with the Government of Turkmenistan on the energy supply of Ashgabat city (population 600,000) as part of the consortium with Belgian Enex. The agreement was signed in February 2010 during the visit of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to France.

The project is aimed at improving the quality and reliability of energy system and responding to growth in energy consumption due to the dynamic development of Ashgabat.

The project is planned to be implemented in three phases until 2017. The cost is estimated at $1.6 billion.
