MISO CEO on industry landscape, challenges ahead

Carmel, Ind. – At the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC)’s annual Summer Reliability Forum, John R. Bear, MISO President and CEO, announced that MISO is well prepared to meet expected peak demand this summer, but the real challenge will come in subsequent summers as resource portfolios evolve requiring greater regional coordination and cooperation.

As part of the summer assessment analysis, MISO considered new environmental regulations and historical weather patterns. MISO’s role is to ensure reliability as the new air quality standards for fossil fuel plants are implemented. MISO does not expect the new regulations to impact its ability to reliably deliver energy this summer, the region’s generation portfolio shift from reliance on coal-fired generation to gas may pose challenges in the requiring the grid operator to work closely with regulators and other state officials. Challenges include evolving federal energy policy, construction and operational costs for new generation as older units retire; improvements in and widespread adoption of technology such as carbon capture and sequestration and natural gas and electricity harmonization.

MISO estimates expected peak demand for power this summer to reach 94,395 MW, with 114,475 MW of total designated generation capacity and 4,529 MW of total demand-side management programs.
