Essent, Tendril partner on smart energy application crowdsourcing project

Boulder, Colo., April 25, 2012 — Tendril partnered with Essent N.V., an energy company in the Netherlands serving more than 2 million households, to collaborate on a smart energy application crowdsourcing project.

This project will use the Tendril Connect cloud platform to link some of Essent's smart meter-enabled residential customers with web and mobile application developers from around the world. The app developers will use Tendril Connect APIs to access rich interval usage data from energy meters and create innovative consumer apps for the program participants.

The project will be presented at The Next Web Kings of Code Hack Battle taking place April 25-26 in Amsterdam and will officially begin later this year. During the pilot, app developers will create and test their apps.

Essent will then make the apps available to participating households, who will be able to provide feedback to developers, and even rate the applications. The apps could be in a position to gain the attention of Essent's parent company RWE and its various business units, representing millions of energy customers throughout Europe.

Research has shown that consumers who receive real-time access to their electricity consumption information can achieve significant energy savings. According to a study by the Electric Power Research Institute, consumers who have the ability to monitor their energy use in real-time reduce their electricity consumption by as much as 20 percent.

To help jumpstart the effort, Essent will award 1,000 euros to the developer who builds the best app using Tendril's APIs at The Next Web Kings of Code Hack Battle this week. Essent will also provide additional prizes for the creator of the app that receives the best rating from consumers in the crowdsourcing program.
