Peterborough, Ontario, March 8, 2012 — Peterborough homeowners will be able to use mobile access, the Internet and text messages to better understand their energy consumption habits and save money on utility bills.
Peterborough Distribution Inc. and Ottawa-based Energate Inc. are rolling out a new program that uses existing Internet connections and a smart thermostat display to give consumers real-time information on energy use and pricing including time of use pricing.
The utility will also be able to better manage peaks and meet aggressive conservation targets mandated by the Ontario Energy Board through the Ontario Power Authority's peaksaverPLUS program.
Pilots completed in Peterborough, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge saw utility bills reduced by up to 30 percent. The Energate platform is leading the North American industry, which uses two-way communications and broadband Internet to give both utilities and homeowners more information and control of their energy use.
Peterborough Distribution Inc. is the first local distribution company in Ontario to partner with Energate, which has successfully deployed its solution in several U.S. states including Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas.
Energate's Ontario solution set includes Blue Line Meter Sensor technology that draws consumption data into the home from Ontario's advanced meters.
Under the program, eligible participants will receive a device that could be an all-in-one smart thermostat and display, or a switch paired with a customer information display. Customers who receive the smart thermostat will be able to automatically adjust usage based on the time of use rates in place in Ontario.
The smart thermostat will actually respond in real time to changing price signals to save money by reducing air conditioning use as much as the customer wants. The customer information display will provide the consumer additional insight into their home energy use by showing real-time data on how much energy is being used. The utility and the province can also reduce overall system demand by employing load control strategies during peak periods.
