Solar panel maker Solyndra files for bankruptcy protection

Washington, D.C., September 6, 2011 — Solar panel manufacturer Solyndra, LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections in Delaware bankruptcy court.

The firm had previously received $535 million in federal loan guarantees. Solyndra joins fellow solar firms Evergreen Solar and SpectraWatt, both of which have filed for bankruptcy within the past two weeks.

Solyndra said in a statement that it could not compete with larger overseas rivals who could produce solar energy technology more cheaply.
