Cayce, S.C., August 19, 2011 — South Carolina Electric and Gas Co., a unit of SCANA Corp., completed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's final safety evaluation report for the two new nuclear units at V.C. Summer Station in Jenkinsville, SC.
The NRC, in its FSER, concluded that there are no safety aspects that would preclude issuing the combined construction and operating licenses for the proposed reactors at the site.
Issuance of SCE&G's COL is dependent upon completion of the rulemaking process, as well as a mandatory hearing. Completion of the FSER for SCE&G's new units is a prerequisite for the mandatory hearing process to begin.
The schedule continues to support NRC approval of the COL within the company's previously announced timeframe of late 2011 or early 2012.
SCE&G is a regulated public utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to about 664,000 customers in South Carolina.
