E.U. wind power will triple by 2020

August 2, 2011 — Electricity production from wind power is expected to increase from 182 terawatt hours or 5.5 percent of the total E.U. demand in 2010, according to a report released by the European Wind Energy Association.

The EWEA published its scenarios for onshore and offshore wind power deployment in the E.U., ahead of the European Commission's Energy Roadmap 2050, due to be published later this year.

Wind power generation will increase from 182 TWh in 2010, to 581 TWh or 15.7 percent of the total E.U. demand in 2020.

By 2020 the electricity production from wind energy will be equivalent to the total electricity consumption of all households in France, Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom together.

By 2030 1,154 TWh (28 percent of total demand) would be produced by wind power, more than the E.U.'s predicted 241 million private households are expected to consume in 2030. Today, wind power produces electricity equivalent to the consumption of 50 million average E.U. households.

EWEA's report shows that the 27 E.U. Member States will have very different increases in wind power capacity over the coming years:

Greece: x 5.4 (23 percent)
Hungary: x 3 (4 percent)
Ireland: x 4.2 (52 percent)
Italy: x 2.7 (9 percent)
Latvia: x 6.4 (5 percent),
Lithuania: x 6.5 (18 percent)
Luxembourg: x 7.1 (7 percent)
Malta: 0 to 100 MW (8 percent)
Netherlands: x 4.2 (20 percent)
Poland: x 9.5 (14 percent)
Portugal: x 1.9 (28 percent)
Romania: x 6.5 (10 percent)
Slovakia: 3 to 800 MW (5 percent)
Slovenia: 0 to 500 MW (6 percent)
