Fort Collins, Colo., June 1, 2011 — Telvent will design, install and manage the distributed control system (DCS) for Shams Power Co.'s Shams-1 solar thermal power plant in Madinat Zayed, 75 miles southwest of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
This joint venture of Masdar (60 percent), Total (20 percent) and Abengoa (20 percent) selected Telvent's solution to control and operate one of the world's largest concentrated solar power projects and the first of its kind in the Middle East.
Extending over an area of about 1.5 square miles, the plant will generate 100 MW of power from 768 parabolic trough collectors.
With this Telvent solution, Shams Power Co.'s plant operators will have the ability to control and supervise all solar plant processes in accordance with the most current technology, allowing it to manage the position of the solar power trough collectors to efficiently capture the sun's energy over the entire course of the day, anticipating weather conditions and improving the power block output.
Telvent was selected for the project due to its reliability, adaptability and expertise in the solar energy field. The company is a leader in developing and implementing solutions for the delivery of intelligent information to maximize solar energy production.
This project marks the twelfth Abengoa-owned commercial power plant for which Telvent has developed integrated control systems. Telvent also has installations with integrated solar plants in Spain, the U.S., Morocco and Algeria.
