Voith Hydro overhauls Canadian power plant

Montreal, Quebec, April 19, 2011 Voith Hydro Canada has won a contract to supply parts for the DeCew Falls 1 project. Operator Ontario Power Generation is overhauling the plant that has been supplying hydropower to the grid for more than a century.

Voith will supply the turbine runner, shaft, and wicket gates of Unit No. 8. The overhaul will be complete in early 2012.

The DeCew Falls 1 station was originally put into service in 1898 and produces 23 MW of power.

Voith also had been the original equipment supplier for DeCew Falls 1. Early in the 20th century, the owner, Hamilton Cataract Power Co., ordered four turbine units in Heidenheim for the plant located in direct vicinity to the Niagara Falls. With delivery from 1904 to 1912, these units were amongst the first ones Voith supplied to North America.

Voith Hydro is a Group Division of Voith and with a workforce of currently almost 5,200 employees and an order intake of around $1,387.3 million in the business year 2009/2010 belongs to the world-wide leading companies for hydro power equipment.

Voith Hydro Canada, headquartered in Brossard, Quebec has capability to provide water to wire support for the Canadian hydro market for new and existing hydropower stations. Voith Hydro's Canadian operations are home to the Global Center of Excellence for Generator Coils located in Mississauga, Ontario.
