US district energy chief positive about Trump presidency

There is no reason why district energy cannot continue on an upward trend in the US under the new presidency, according to the CEO of the International District Energy Association (IDEA).

Robert Thornton told Decentralized Energy that Donald Trump has shown himself to be favourable to the sector’s technologies in the past. In addition the need for energy efficiency is not disputed by either party at this time.

“Fortunately, energy efficiency and economic resiliency are largely bi-partisan issues,” Thornton said. “During the campaign, both candidates discussed the need to invest in modernizing energy infrastructure as a means to generate high quality jobs and reinforce local economies.”

IDEA is to host a Capitol Hill Briefing on December 6th in the Senate Office Building in Washington DC to alert Congressional and Administration staff on the inherent efficiency and resiliency advantages of district energy/CHP/microgrids for cities, communities and campuses and the potential for public/private partnership infrastructure investment.

That event will be followed by a Microgrid Summit on December 7 at the National Press Club in Washington DC to engage state regulators, government agencies and industry leaders in advocating deployment of district energy/cogeneration/microgrids to strengthen economic resiliency.

Over all Thornton believes the changing of the guard will not harm district energy technology under the new administration, despite speculation of  roll-back of other clean energy legislation introduced under President Obama.

“Coincidentally, President-elect Trump in his real estate background in New York City, has been a long term customer and user of district energy services in many of his properties in Manhattan,” Thornton says. “While it is likely a Republican majority will emphasize domestic energy production, IDEA will continue and even redouble our 108 year effort in support of efficient, reliable and environmentally-responsible district energy systems in cities, communities and campuses.”
