Paris geothermal heating progress continues

The Parisian renaissance in geothermal district heating continues, with another neighbourhood in the city set to be heated in this way by winter of next year.

The Grigny geothermal project, has reached a drilling depth of 1,200 meters with a target depth of 1,600 meters. The project expects to tap into water with a temperature of around 70 degrees Celsius.

It is expected that the project will start delivering heat to around 10,000 households and communal buildings in the municipalities of Grigny and Viry-Châtillon.

France is looking to exploit its highly promising geothermal power potential to provide heating for around 170,000 homes as well as schools and hospitals.

Cofor and Schlumberger, an oil services company is being engaged for its expertise in drilling to burrow under the city at a point in the Parisian suburbs between the Eiffel Tower and Orly Airport.

Bloomberg reports that the Paris region has the world’s second largest concentration after Iceland of so-called low-energy geothermal installations.

The city already possesses the Villejuif, Chevilly-Larue and L’Hay-les-Roses geothermal network, the largest of its kind in Europe and energy minister Segolene Royal is fully behind continuing to drive investment in the technology.
