Indian and UK groups set to co-operate on decentralized energy

Indian NGO Climate Parliament has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UK’s Renewable Energy Association (REA) aimed at fostering co-operation in the decentralized renewable energy sector.

The MoU was signed on a recent visit to the UK by six Indian MPs, who were briefed on UK innovations in decentralized energy systems.

The delegation included current and former members of India's parliamentary Water, Energy, Petroleum & Natural Gas, and Coal Mines committees.

The two groups agreed to work together in the coming months to develop relationships between Indian and UK businesses and politicians with the goal of expanding access to decentralized energy, the REA said.

India has set a target of installing 100 GW of solar power by 2022 and has committed to decarbonization under the Paris climate agreement. However, 237 million of its people still lack access to electricity.

Niharika Krishna, South Asia Programme Co-ordinator at Climate Parliament, said: ‘Each of the six MPs who took part in this trip to the UK already are actively developing decentralized energy systems in their home constituencies. During this trip they met a range of UK companies and keenly learned about solar, energy storage, biomethane, and more.

‘We look forward to working with the REA over the coming months to strengthen commercial and political ties between the UK and India, and facilitate the deployment of decentralized energy systems.’
