Waste heat powering Parisian swimming pool

The French government is looking at using more of the Parisian sewage infrastructure for building heating purposes following one such successful effort at the Aspirant Dunand swimming pool in the in the 14th arrondissement of the city.

 Wednesday, 5 October saw the inauguration of a new heat recovery facility at the busy municipal building, serving to heat water basins and showers.

The pool is heated by a heat uptake mechanism from sewage waters with temperature ranges between 13 ° C and 20 ° C due to the heat of the water discharged by sanitary and domestic equipment.

The principle of recovery of this heat is comparable to a "low temperature" geothermal power. The heat is recovered by metal plates installed in the sewers beneath the pool, which circulate the water. Heat pumps are then used to increase the temperature of basins and showers at the pool.

Partnered with the City of Paris, Suez Water France has already developed, since 2010, such facilities on a dozen sites in France, be that swimming pools, schools and other public facilities, serving to half electricity needs.

The equipment has seen the pool halve its electricity needs for heating, amounting so far to 1,310 megawatt hours (MWh) per year, as well as significant drop in carbon emissions.

"We are really trying to move to a new energy model”, says Celia Blauel, Deputy for Environment and Sustainable Development. “The future is no longer the behemoths of large centralized systems, but local solutions.”

Installation of the innovative technology feeds from the Climate Plan-for air and energy for the city, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption by 25% by 2020, compared to 2004, as well as a target of 25% renewable energy or recovery.

It also complements the city’s initiative to give a new use to the 2 400 km of sewerage network in the capital.
