Engie in UK CHP plant refurb contract win

France’s Engie has won a contract to refurbish a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Leeds, UK.

The Leeds Generating Station Complex (GSC) supplies over 50 MW of steam in addition to power, hot and chilled water, and compressed air to the University of Leeds campus and Leeds General Infirmary.

The £27m ($35m) refurbishment project’s initial phase will include supply of a new 33 kV high-voltage connection and substation, with subsequent planned replacement of the heating, power and cooling equipment, including an unspecified number of CHP units with a total output of 15 MW.

Under the terms of the contract, Engie will operate and maintain the facility for 25 years.

Paul Rawson, ENGIE’s UK Divisional CEO for Energy Solutions, said: ‘As a leader in decentralized energy we are pleased to have secured this long-term contract which will provide low carbon, efficient supply of energy to the campus site supporting their operations.

‘This project will deliver the reliability and resilience demanded, whilst our ongoing management of the GSC will ensure the plant continues to deliver optimum energy performance with minimum carbon emissions into the future.’
