London’s oldest hospital modernizes with trigen

London’s oldest hospital has modernized its energy system with a new trigeneration plant and energy centre, which came online this week.

St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the city centre aims to increase its energy security and efficiency by replacing its aging power and heating system, while reducing fuel costs and cutting environmental impact.

At the heart of the plant is a 1.4 MW Jenbacher gas engine from GE (pictured), supplied by distributor Clarke Energy. The combined heating, cooling and power (CCHP) energy centre, delivered by Swedish project developer Skanska, features a 250 kW absorption chiller, also supplied by Clarke Energy.

The project represents the first investment under ‘Powering Health’, a collaboration between energy efficiency project finance firm SDCL, GE, Clarke Energy and the National Health Service (NHS). The partnership aims to finance and implement CHP solutions across the health service.

According to SDCL, the project is the first fully financed Private Finance Initiative (PFI) of its kind.

Fiona Daly, associate director of sustainability and patient transport for Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs St Bartholomew’s Hospital, said:  ‘This project illustrates the leadership role that hospitals can play in supporting the UK’s efforts to address climate change through energy efficiency.’
