Finnish supermarket to feature nation’s largest on-site solar system

A leading supermarket chain in Finland is set to build what it claims will be the nation’s largest on-site solar power system.

Kesko, which owns supermarkets across Finland, is to collaborate with Solnet Green Energy Oy to build a 503 kWp solar system comprised of 1600 solar panels on the roof of K-citymarket Tammisto in the city of Vantaa.

The system is expected to cover around half of the supermarket’s power demand on sunny summer days.

Construction is planned to begin in May and the plant should come online by the end of June, Kesko said.

In an additional feature, K-citymarket Tammisto’s customers will be able to monitor the store’s solar production in real time on screens located inside the market. Solar-powered charging points for electric vehicles will also be installed.
