CCHP system wins German Cooling Prize

A combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system developed by Germany’s SPIE Energy Solutions has won the 2016 German Cooling Prize, which recognizes organizations that have developed and implemented low-emission technologies and environmentally-friendly solutions in the area of cooling technology.

The CCHP system was developed for pharmaceutical company Takeda in Singen, Baden-Wurttemberg and is operated by SPIE under a 10-year contract.

SPIE said its system, installed in 2014, had saved Takeda €1.1 million ($1.24 million) in energy costs. The facility also cut its power consumption by 11,500 MWh per year, its heat consumption by 7800 MWh per year and its carbon emissions by 4350 tonnes per year.

Germany’s environment minister Barbara Hendricks presented the prize, which comes with a €10,000 award.

Thomas Knorr, Senior Project Manager at SPIE, said, ‘For 30 years, we at SPIE have been planning, implementing and operating energy efficiency boosting measures with success guarantees for our customers. The German Cooling Prize reaffirms our efforts in this area and motivates us to continue innovating.’

In 2014 the same system won SPIE an award from Germany's AGFW energy efficiency trade body and the journal Energie & Management.
