Wind-powered microgrid commissioned in Russia

Mitsui & Co Ltd and its project partners announced this week that they have commissioned a microgrid powered by small wind turbines in a remote Russian region.

Located in the township of Ust-Kamchatsk in Russia’s Far East, the project was undertaken in co-operation with Russian state utility RAO Energy Systems of the East (RAO ESE), the main supplier of power and heat to communities in the Far East and eastern Siberia, along with partners Komaihaltec Inc and Fuji Electric.  

The wind power plant consists of three 300 kW turbines and a grid stabilization system featuring electric boilers.

The one-year demonstration project aims to verify specifications for cold climate-resistant wind turbines, and to test the microgrid system to ensure smooth operation and interconnection between the wind power plant, an existing diesel station and heat generation facilities.

It also aims to verify the system’s effect on the local community's power and heat balance, and to confirm the potential for widespread implementation of this kind of technology in remote regions, including those with harsh climate conditions.

Mitsui noted in a press statement that, in Russia’s remote off-grid areas, the cost of fuel transportation has been rising for years and cost-cutting measures ‘have become an issue of critical importance’.
