EfW CHP plant among Poland’s first

Construction work has been completed on an energy-from-waste (EfW) combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Poland, the developers announced this week.

The plant, located in Bialystok, was built by a consortium led by environmental solutions firm Keppel Seghers Belgium and including Polish construction firm Budimex and Spanish waste management company Cespa Compania Espanola de Servicios Publicos Auxiliares.

Work on the $83m contract began in 2012.

The plant will process around 120,000 tonnes of waste per year, from which it is expected to supply 7.6 MWe in the summer months and 6.1 MWe in winter, plus 17.5 MWth to the city’s district heating network.

Keppel Seghers said it designed an air-cooled grate and a vertical boiler for the plant, which also features an incineration bottom ash handling system which can extract ferrous, non-ferrous and aggregate materials for recycling, and a fly ash solidification plant.

The plant has now been handed over to the client, Bialystok's municipal solid waste management company Przedsiębiorstwo Usługowo-Handlowo-Produkcyjne. It is among the first EfW plants to achieve commercial operation in Poland, Keppel Seghers said.
