CHP for BMW in DE

New combined heat and power (CHP) solutions are to be installed at two BMW production plants in Germany.

E.ON Connecting Energies (ECT) is to install the CHP systems at BMW’s Dingolfing and Regensburg (pictured) facilities.

At Dingolfing, ECT said it plans to install two CHP units that can operate with return flow temperatures of up to 100 degrees C. The company said it aims to install the units without shutting down the facility, and with only minor modifications to its hot water system.

The Regensburg plant currently has four CHP units in operation, and ECT said it plans to install a fifth identical unit, also without shutting down operations. The installation aims to increase the facility’s share of power for use on-site, although details were not given.

Both installations will be tailored to the plants’ specific needs, ECT said, and are expected to reduce their aggregate carbon emissions by around 10,000 tonnes per year.

Robert Hienz, ECT’s CEO, said the project ‘shows the importance of taking into account the specific situation at the client’s site. I am pleased that we were able to find on-site generation solutions for BMW that are not only highly efficient, but also tailor-made for the respective plant.’
