ADE awards highlight decentralised energy innovation

District heating, combined heat and power (CHP) and on-site power projects and technologies were among this year’s winners at the UK’s Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) awards.

The Innovation Award went to Guru Systems for their use of remote monitoring to improve the efficiency of district heating networks, while the Industrial and Commercial Award went to two winners: Cofely UK for energy waste reduction at its South Humber Bank power plant, and Edina for an integrated approach to sustainability in its two CHP plants at Arla Foods.

The Public Sector Award went to South West Devon Partnership and MVV Environment Ltd for a CHP energy-from-waste project in Plymouth.

British Gas Efficiency won the Campus, Community and Residential Award for a biomass CHP retrofit on community housing in Solihull, while ENER-G Group won the International Award for a CHP project at St Peter’s University in the US state of New Jersey.

The Integrated Energy Award celebrated the use of electric heating for tenants of CityWest Homes. The ADE said the project marked the first time in the Awards’ history that electric heating has won in any category.

Also highly commended were Arup’s Decentralised Energy Programme Delivery Unit and two CHP entries from Cofely:  Rampton Hospital and Aston University.

ADE Director Dr Tim Rotheray said: ‘Our industry is delivering real change, whether it is through designing systems that save clients money, installing equipment that cuts energy use, lifting the vulnerable from fuel poverty or helping business manage their energy.

‘We are the driving force behind powerful change; the change of hundreds of thousands of actions that are moving the UK to be a more efficient, less wasteful economy.

‘This is an industry that should rightly be proud of itself and the tremendous positive impact that it is making.’

We'll take a detailed look at the winning projects and technologies in our January-February print magazine, so stay tuned!
