Maryland opens CHP grant programme

Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has opened its 2016 combined heat and power (CHP) grant programme to commercial applications.

Designed to further encourage CHP growth in the US state and promoted under the name ‘MEA CHP FY16 Grant Program’, the grants will target industrial and critical infrastructure facilities, including healthcare, wastewater treatment, and essential state and local government facilities.

The programme also specifically encourages the implementation of CHP technologies that leverage biogas/biomass as a fuel source in industrial and critical infrastructure facilities.

Individual grants range in size from up to $425/kW to up to $575/kW installed, based on the size of the CHP system, with a maximum per project cap of $500,000, subject to funding availability.

Applications close on 1 February 2016 and by 1 January, 2018 all systems must be fully commissioned.

Eligible CHP projects must be located in Maryland, official groundbreaking must occur by January 2017 and the projects must have an anticipated annual CHP system efficiency of 60% or more.

Reportedly, the state plans to make $4.025 million available for CHP installations.
