New gas turbine for on-site power

Siemens this week introduced a new aero-derivative gas turbine aimed at providing on-site power for the offshore oil and gas sector.

The Industrial RB211-GT30 (pictured) features a package design that is 30% smaller and lighter than previous designs, the firm said.

Among the turbine’s features are a three-point base mount and torque tube design, optimised for offshore duty. The turbine drives a two-pole AC generator at either 60 Hz or 50 Hz with no need for a gearbox. According to Siemens, the complete turbine can be removed from either side of the package via a built-in rail system, and exchanged in less than 24 hours. The company said the auxiliary systems are functionally unchanged from previous models, but have been optimised to improve maintenance access and maximise online maintenance while the unit is running.

‘With our Industrial RB211-GT30, we’re introducing a new benchmark in power generation solutions for the global oil and gas industry, especially for floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs),’ said Thomas Flommersfeld, Head of Strategy and Portfolio Management for Siemens’ Distributed Generation Business Unit.

Over the last 20 years a large portion of global offshore oil exploration, drilling and production has moved from relatively accessible shallow water to increasingly deep and ultra-deep waters. Demand for FPSOs has been driven by significant investment in fields off the Brazilian and West African coasts, and Siemens said it believes that this trend is likely to continue over the next decade, with Southeast Asian projects following the same path, but with lower oil production volumes in shallower water.
