E.ON’s Exeter low carbon heating project to commence

E.ON’s low-carbon heating project near Exeter in England is in advance planning stages and is expected to ready by summer’s end.

SeeNews reports that the project combines a 2,000-sq-m solar thermal array and a high-temperature heat pump to supply E.ON's community energy centre in Cranbrook. It recently won a second-tranche grant of nearly $2.2bn/EUR 2bn in the UK Department of Energy & Climate Change’s (DECC) Heat Network Small Business Research Initiative competition.
E.on is partnering in the project with technology providers SK Solar and Star Renewable Energy and the University of Exeter. The green technologies will work together to show how they can replace or complement the existing combined heat and power (CHP) district heating scheme and thus cut both the cost and carbon footprint of heating and hot water.

“In years to come the integrated technology we are pioneering here could be replicated in existing and new-build district heating schemes across the country and would make a significant contribution to easing the impact on the environment which comes from domestic heating,” Tim Rook, head of design for community energy at E.ON, said.
