Amazon in data services on-site power deal

Amazon Web Services’ data centre is to be supplied on-site power from a 150 MW wind farm under a deal with Siemens.

Siemens will supply 65 SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.3 MW, and 67 transformers for the Amazon Wind Farm on Fowler Ridge, in Indiana in the US, under development for Pattern Energy. Siemens Financial Services (SFS) will also be providing $150m of construction financing for Fowler Ridge.

Installation is scheduled to begin in July and commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2016. Siemens will also be providing long-term service for the wind turbines.

‘US technology companies such as Amazon are increasingly covering their rising energy demands with clean wind-based power,’ stated Thomas Richterich, CEO of the Unit Onshore markets within the Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division.

At the end of last year Amazon pledged to run its data centres throughout the world with power from renewable energy sources.
