Microturbine-based CHP for New York veterans' hospital

A medical centre serving US veterans is to upgrade its on-site power facility with a microturbine-based combined heat and power (CHP) system from Capstone Turbine.

In a move to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency and reliability, the US Department of Veterans’ Affairs has commissioned a power plant upgrade for its Veterans’ Administration Medical Centre (VAMC) (pictured) in the city of Syracuse in northern New York state. The new plant will include eight gas-fired C65 microturbines in an integrated combined heat and power (ICHP) configuration.

The plant is expected to produce 520 kW of electricity as well as hot water for the medical centre.

Capstone said space constraints for the project figured in the VAMC’s decision to go with a microturbine-based system.

‘Hospitals are ideal applications for combined heat and power systems since they require heat and electricity on a continuous basis. Capstone microturbines provide improved efficiency and the added reliability and certainty needed for these facilities,’ said Hussein Shousher, president of Capstone’s New York distributor GEM Energy.

The firm said the VAMC project represents its second order from a major New York healthcare facility in the past two months.
